Overview: Car Electrical Repair, Diagnostic & Inspection
Electrical faults do not come with a part number. The window works on Tuesday and not on Wednesday. The dash lights flicker at idle. The car dies at a stop sign and starts again like nothing happened. Somebody has to sit with a wiring diagram and a meter and follow the circuit until it gives itself up, and that is a different trade from bolting on parts. The work covers charging and starting faults, chewed wiring harnesses, and grounds corroded where the strap meets the body. Add modules that have stopped talking to each other on the car's network, dash and marker lights, and the mess left behind when an accessory was spliced into whatever wire was handy. Half the job is finding it. That is also the billing argument. The connector or the relay at the end of the hunt is often the cheap half, and the hours are the bill. A shop that charges honestly for time on a fault is the one that can afford to keep looking. Free diagnosis has to be paid for somewhere, and it usually gets paid for in parts you did not need. Use the state and city lists below. Real auto electricians are thin on the ground, so a drive to the next town is normal for this one.
